Bummer! Even though she already dyed her hair red and shot all her scenes, it appears creative reasons have forced Shailene Woodley’s introduction as Mary Jane Watson out of sequel “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
This shocking announcement came on the heels of Sony announcing that “The Amazing Spider-Man 3″ and “The Amazing Spider-Man 4″ were already in the works and even had release dates, so it’s possible a new decision to stretch out Peter Parker’s storyline has affected the introduction of his One True Love. Indeed, director Marc Webb has released a statement, citing a desire to focus on Peter’s current established relationship with first love Gwen Stacy: “I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.” Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone continue to film their scenes in New York, with “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ set for release on May 2, 2014.
Woodley, for her part, is disappointed. “Of course I’m bummed,” she tells EW. “But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. MJ only appeared in a few scenes and I wouldn’t trade the experience of working with Andrew and Emma for three days on set for the world. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film.” But now reports are emerging that if and when MJ is introduced, she may not be played by Woodley at all, with the actress committed to teen action franchise “Divergent” for the foreseeable future.
