The internet is abuzz today that the post-credits scene of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ doesn’t feature the usual – tease of Andrew Garfield’s future or even the future of Dane DeHaan’s Goblin and his fellow “Sinister Six,” but rather, for unexplained reasons, the mutants of “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
According to various reports of people who have already seen the film in places like the UK, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and Lucas Till’s Havok appear at the very tail end of the newest “Spider-Man,” though apparently without giving away any connection to the Spidey universe Sony has built. The mutants, of course, belong to Fox, and up until now no one has figured out a way for the two studios to work together to allow their intellectual properties – pretty good allies in the comics – to inter-mingle. Is that about to change?
Maybe not. According to Variety, the scene could be there for one purpose only: promotion. “The reason is that “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight to helm another film following 2009′s “500 (Days) of Summer.” After “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012, Webb’s negotiations briefly stalled with Sony as he was caught in a tug-of-war with Fox. Eventually, Fox agreed to allow Webb to direct Sony’s “Spider-Man” sequel, but only if Sony would promote its “X-Men” film for free.”
But could it be more than that? Both studios are keeping quiet on the issue, though Fox did relent just a little, telling Film Divider cryptically, “It’s not an error. You’re in for a treat.”
A treat of what magnitude? Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Your move, “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
